Welcome to the Gray Fox Star Harbor Wiki
Gray Fox Star Harbor is an astronomical observatory, owned and operated by Dr. James Smith, located in Surprise, Arizona, and is devoted to providing entertaining and educational materials to assist and encourage the observation of solar system and deep space celestial objects. The primary purpose of this Wiki is to provide information and materials (downloadable text/image files) for the Annual West Valley Astronomy Club's Messier Marathon (open to the public) scheduled for April 2, 2011. There is no alternate date this year becasue moon conditions are unfavorable on either side of this weekend. In the past, I presented this information in a ten week adult education course meeting for two hours once a week. Since getting a meeting room for the WVA Club to use for this purpose is not economically feasible, I have decided to put this information into a “Wiki” format that registered WVA Club members and other invited guests may use to prepare for the upcoming Messier Marathon and thereby enhance their overall enjoyment of the experience. WHAT THE HECK IS A WIKI?
The name "Wiki" may seem strange at first, but it comes from "WikiWiki" which is Hawaiian for "quick". Wiki is computer-internet jargon for a website that allows multiple users to create and interact in a collaborative manner. Wikis can be any number of things. A Wiki is software that operates on a seamless background that handles complex problems with simple solutions. For example, you don't have to know how to write HTML code; the Wiki manages all that for you. A Wiki is a composition system; it's a discussion medium; it's a repository of information and images; it's a mail system; it's a tool for collaboration. Most importantly, it's a fun way of communicating quickly across the network. This particular wiki is provided FREE to us by Wetpaint.com, one of the largest and most successful wiki providers. You are free to use all the tools provided by Wetpaint (see and explore links as you wish) to operate within this Wiki. Since the Wiki is provided FREE, you will notice ads in the open spaces--just ignore them. To have the Wiki without ads requires a monthly fee of $20/ month; so they are worth putting up with. NOTE: I am using this wiki in an information distribution or "Online Course" format; don't worry there aren't any exams. This wiki differs from others in that the pages herein are not open to contribution. If you have suggestions or comments you may communicate these to me in the "Threads for this page" at the bottom of each page. I will try to get to these as time allows.
